“Grease: Live!” premiered on Sunday, January 31. Thomas Kail directed this live rendition of the classic movie so impressively that he made it look just like “Grease” the movie, performed live. The play opened up with Jessie J singing “Grease is the Word”. The live production included an all-star cast featuring Julianne Hough (Sandy), Aaron Tveit (Danny), Vanessa Hudgens (Rizzo) and many more.
The production was very visually impressive, with the use of the cameras and lighting making it seem prerecorded. “Freddy My Love” (sang by Keke Palmer) went from a pajama party into a runway. “Grease Lightning” had some intense costume changes and some amazing choreography. “Beauty School Dropout,” sang by Boyz 2 Men, followed a beautiful song sang by Carly Rae Jepsen that was written specifically for this production.
Some of my favorite moments from the night was when Jordan Fisher, who played Doody, had the audience in awe while he sang “Those Magic Changes,” as well as the scene of the dance and when Vanessa Hudgens (who lost her father the night before) sang “These are the Worse Things I Could Do.”
If live productions like “The Wiz”, “The Sound of Music,” and “Grease: Live” keep having such successful reviews, there may be a lot more produced for live TV.
